The Cryptanthropus Project

Investigating the historical and biological question of North America’s reported mystery apes.

The Project does not begin with the premise that Bigfoot exists or does not exist. Its purpose is to determine what the available evidence can support.

The Question

What does the historical and scientific evidence actually support?

The Investigation

Archives, original records, witness material, geography and relevant sciences.

The Standard

Find the source. Establish provenance. Separate independent evidence from repetition. Preserve uncertainty. Follow the evidence.

The Goal

A clearer understanding of a longstanding question through disciplined, traceable research.

A Working Term

What Is Cryptanthropus?

Cryptanthropus, noun: A proposed descriptive term for an alleged, unclassified humanlike or ape-like organism reported through historical accounts, contemporary observations, folklore, or physical evidence, whose zoological identity has not been scientifically established.

The term is descriptive, not taxonomic. Its use does not assert that an unknown species has been scientifically established.

Research

Evidence first. Context always.

Our work draws on historical and archival research, source provenance, source criticism, independent corroboration, anthropology, primatology, zoology, ecology, genetics, geography and environmental reconstruction.

Public-facing work describes the standards, evidence and conclusions. Proprietary research systems and internal methods remain behind the curtain.

“A claim becomes more useful when we know where it came from, how it changed, and what the original record actually says.”
